Unforgotten Times:

Jackie Kennedy’s Happy Days in the Virginia Hunt Country

Unforgotten Times

When John and Jacqueline Kennedy were in the White House for their brief but glorious time, they spent many weekends near Middleburg, Virginia.

At Glen Ora, their rented estate just outside Middleburg, they found the privacy they seldom enjoyed while in Washington. Jackie rode across the rolling fields with the local hunts and even competed in competitive race meets. She ran errands in the village just like any other young mother, and made friends along the way.

One of those was the local photographer and business owner, Howard Allen.

Their friendship was based on mutual respect –his for her wish for privacy for her children, and hers for his integrity in respecting that privacy. Over the too–few years spent at Glen Ora, Howard was able to photograph Jackie and the family in their relaxed and private lives. The First Lady in fact sometimes called upon him to document family events for her personal collection.

What grew from this close interaction is a collection of photographs from those years, many of which have never been published, or even seen by the general public.

This book is appearing with the personal good wishes of Caroline Kennedy.

Welcome To Howard Allen Photography

Howard Allen became a friend of Jackie Kennedy in 1961 when his daughters were fellow pony club members with Caroline Kennedy in Middleburg. He was thus able to share private moments with Jackie and her children in Virginia’s beautiful Hunt Country.
